Duane is a born leader — captain of the basketball team, role model and hero to his younger brother. He has his whole life ahead of him. And tonight, he feels invincible, ready for great things ahead.
But they won’t come.
Next year, Duane is going to blow out his knee. He’ll be prescribed opioid painkillers and become addicted. Not long after, he’ll lose his scholarship and eventually drop out of school.
He won’t be able to shake his addiction, and when prescription opioids become too expensive, Duane will switch to heroin.
